ONE CHILDREN'S FOUNDATION, Inc. Date: December 21, 2009
Who: Claudia (founder of ONE Children’s Foundation.), Iris Corral, Marie Roux, and Veronica De Santiago
Departure: Los Angeles, California, US
Arrival: Tijuana, Mexico
Both cities connected by the same sky, yet as we cross the border, we cannot help but notice the difference in scenery: poverty, a l ...ife of survival, and a plea and desperate hope for a better life. We, the volunteers from ONE Children’s Foundation., don’t know really what to expect for our 2 days in Tijuana. All we know is that we have a truck and three cars filled with food, clothing, medicine and toys to give to children in orphanages, shelters and hospitals.

Upon our arrival our guide, Katie, greets us and escorts us to Colonia Divina Providencia to the ORPHANAGE CAVID ALEJANDRO where Senora Veronica greets us by surprise. We observe the shocking conditions: a house with barely a roof, a door and walls that she and her husband build from plywood.
Senora Veronica tells us that five years ago she named her shelter in honor of her fourteen year old son who was kidnapped and brought back dead because she and her husband couldn’t pay the ransom. She and her husband have decided to help children who are in need. Some children were living in the streets, some have been sent to her because their own family abuses them, others have parents that are drug addicts or prostitutes who cannot take care of them.
Veronica, her husband and their two young daughters together provide shelter and food for (22) twenty-two children and three adult women. In order to buy food, Senora Veronica makes little flowers in foam and glitter and the children place a poem on the top of it. Then all day her husband goes to town and tries to sell the handmade flowers for 10 pesos (less than a dollar) each. The barely make enough money to feed themselves.
Last week’s heavy storm caused huge leaks in the orphanage’s roof and the rain destroyed many of the little beds. Now everyone must sleep sideways on the beds in order to have enough space.
There is no insulation, no hot water, no stove, no washer, no phone, and no heat. But they have something unique there, a sense of family and safety. At night Senora Veronica and her husband go on the streets and offer help to those children who are willing to accept it. Like with this little boy, Giovanni, whom they approached at night in the streets while he was eating from a trash can. Giovanni has burns on his face. The child was hurt with burning forks by his parents when he couldn’t meet the quota from gum selling in the streets., they would burn his face.
Senora Veronica and her family give all that they have. She was crying while sharing her story with us because she feels powerless when they ask for more food or a warmer sweater and she has to say no. But for us we see the love and the smiles they all carry on their beautiful faces.
They were so happy to see us. All the children were helping us carry boxes of food and medicine, diapers, toys and clothes… They were smiling and grateful for what we were doing and as we were hugging one another Claudia was carefully listening to what Senora Veronica needed the most and how we could best serve her to help the children. She says they need: diapers, blankets, toothpaste, toothbrushes, toilet paper, towels, napkins, pots and pans, over the counter medicines (baby Tylenol), cleaning supplies (pine sol, bleach, detergent, soap, etc.) fire extinguishers, blenders, heaters, smoke detectors, sewing machine, bunk beds, microwave, stove, washer, TV DVD player, construction supplies: dry wall, paint, cement, nails, wood, and insulation, school supplies, food, money to pay for gas, phone, electric…

The following day we came back to ORPHANAGE CAVID ALEJANDRO and the children were waiting for us. We were so comforted in seeing most of them wearing the clothes we dropped off the day before. We brought them some warm gigantic pizzas and more toys, as the first day most of the children were not at home because they had to go for a free medical check up so we had promised to come back for them. All of them sat around the table and enjoyed the meal we brought. We played with them and took pictures of them (of which they were very interested in looking at). And ironically they asked our volunteer Marie, the only non fluent Spanish-speaking volunteer in the group, to translate a bedtime story from English to Spanish, it ended up being in French!
To our surprise we were delighted to meet with someone from the government who was there to take photos of the Shelter. Claudia Pinto made a point to talk to the group of government representatives so that they wouldn’t forget their promises! Will they come back and help? Maybe, maybe not but ONE Children’s Foundation will!

ONE CHILDREN'S FOUNDATION, Inc. Second stop: EUNIME, an Orphanage/Shelter for children and their families who live with HIV and AIDS. The women who head the center are Juana Ortiz Quezada and her sister Rosalva. As Juana greeted us we wanted to first learn about the center and see if we would be able to meet with the children. She explained to us the ... reasons for this center and the importance of educating families, parents and children of the disease. Juana and Rosalva discovered that their younger sister, Eunice had contacted the virus when she was 6 months. She died at 4 years old because at that time there was no medicine or proper knowledge of the disease. Juana and Rosalva searched on their own and fought to find the proper care. Naomie, their other sister, was the first child from Tijuana able to participate in a protocol through PACTG. She conveys to us how proper education will help all people affected with the virus to live a good life. The government pays only for the children’s medication month, which covers the basic medicine. But they have over three thousand dollars per month in expenses including food, school, and basic needs. And that’s where we come in.
We met the children but were not allowed to take photos of the children as to respect their confidentiality. Due to lack of education, there is a notion of shame associated with this disease. Also due a to lack of education, many children with the virus would die because he or she would stop taking the medicine once he or she would feel better. In order to help the children and families understand the importance of the treatment they used a unique story: “In all of us there is a good king and a bad king. And in order for the good king to always be strong the child must take the potion all the time.” Seems very simple to understand in those words. Even as we were playing with the children we couldn’t help but notice how in their imaginary stories, when playing with their dolls they asked their dolls to take the potion in order to be always strong! With proper food and medication and education there is great HOPE. Our Foundation’s mission is to inform and to educate in order to save lives, as well as helping lives by supplying the basics needed for survival.

ONE CHILDREN'S FOUNDATION, Inc. Third stop: THE SHELTER FOR IMMIGRANTS where hundreds of people come for a dinner at 6pm and a little spot to sleep. And often times that spot to sleep is on the floor. None of these people are from Tijuana. They have traveled from far foreign countries hoping to cross the border in the search of a better life in the U ...S. Some have been deported from the US after living there for 30 years, so they try to find little jobs during the day and come back for a warm meal and a safe place to lay their bodies at night. They shelter men and women from ages fifteen up. The immigrants’ ultimate goal is to cross the border. They will repeat this goal until they have success or in the other case die. We brought some food and clothes and try to understand their situation. The shelter has some “showers” outside, one burner that works and a roof. But here, where survival is the common denominator, all that really matters to these people is to a little square on earth to leave their belongings.
Is it good? Is it bad? It is our opinion not to judge, but to give a helping hand to a fellow citizen of the world. People aren't going to stop crossing the border just because we offer them no aid-- they're economic refugees. We can want and expect people to take the legal, very expensive, long route to immigration, but what happens to the one who has no money and no hope and no way to feed their children? These people are risking their lives for the hope of something better.

ONE CHILDREN'S FOUNDATION, Inc. It is 8pm and now we are heading to our fourth stop, the COUNTY HOSPITAL at the Pediatric floor. We park close to the gate so the access will be easier to unload the boxes, and we notice numerous adults waiting outside. The guard informs us that these people are waiting to hear from their sick family member who is insi ...de the hospital. They have walked for hours or have taken the buses from very far cities, and because there are no waiting rooms in the hospital or money for hotels, they have no other option but to wait outside. We take the elevator to the Pediatric level where the children are. We are so grateful that the personal and parents are welcoming us at such a late time in the evening. A huge Christmas tree stands in the hallway. We sort out the toys according to age and gender. We couldn’t bring food because most of them have a special diet due to their conditions or illness. That night the age range of the children was from new born babies to 13 years old. Lucky were those who had parents by their side. All families were so grateful for what we brought. Children were smiling and hugging us. Then we were led to Oncology, where the children with cancer were. We made sure to wear the appropriate blue robe, cover our mouth and wash thoroughly our hands for the safety of the children. A bouncing 2-year-old baby took Claudia’s and the volunteers’ attention as he grabbed the little toy and smiled at us. He has a brain tumor and was due for surgery the following day. Each room was separated with glass walls and windows. Each child on his bed with a parent by its side. Different kinds of cancers with different hopes. The nurses were kind to let us share with them what we could. We are praying for the healing of all the children, their courageous family and all the staff that bring them comfort daily.

ONE CHILDREN'S FOUNDATION, Inc. ORPHANAGE EL FARO our last stop before heading back to Los Angeles. There, fifty children are being sheltered. As we enter the shelter and start unloading the truck all of the children come to help us carry the belongings we have for them. We place all the clothes on a large table in a dark room where an old TV enterta ...ins twenty something children. Some watch the old monitor, some are eating the protein bars we gave them, some are excited to show us around, and some play with their new dolls. The center is separated in different quarters, for girls or boys, then children or teenagers. It is a family owned orphanage and children are rescued from parents who can’t take care of them. Some see their parents once a month, some once a year, some never. Drugs, prostitution or domestic violence are the common factors. There are twenty children per room and each has his or her own bed. We look at the scenery - outside lays trash, wires, tires, abandoned cars, roofless homes, construction waste, dogs wandering around. But in the midst of all of this, these children have a place they can call home.

As we journey back to Los Angeles, California, United States of America we feel so blessed for what we have and what we have been able to do with your support to ONE Children’s Foundation. Pictures of unspeakable words stay in our minds. But what remains the most is the smile and comfort we gave and received. The utmost gratifying feeling is that we have made a small difference in a human life. Yes there is so much more to do but it all starts with one step.

We don’t have to stop smiling because someone else is crying; we don’t have to feel guilty for what we have when someone else is barely surviving. But what we can do is start being of service today, giving today, and being truly grateful for what we have now: hot water, a warm piece of clothing, a full belly, a non-leaking roof over our heads, a bed.

We can be grateful for giving a helping hand to the one who has less NOW. Today, with your donations, you are adding smiles to someone else’s life. Just look at the pictures. With your help
One Children’s Foundation can continue to grow and spread love all over the world.

ONE CHILDREN'S FOUNDATION, Inc. We are so happy to have partner with the City Bell Gardens for what was a great XMAS event

Children were so happy...
They ate, tamales, sweet bread, drank juice and hot chocolate.
The live entertainment kept everyone happy and the children from the city of Bell Gardens' ballet folklorico danced to several traditional son ...gs.
Cecilia Bogran, from Univision channel 34 was the master of ceremonies and with the help of children held several raffles throughout the day.
Fonovisa Records recording Artist and host of MTV3 ReMexa show, Jazmin Lopez did an autograph signing and took pictures with the children and their parents.
The highlight of the evening was when Santa Claus arrived and gave presents to all of the lovely children. The evening was full of excitement and joy. Thanks to all of the sponsors more than three hundred children and their families had dinner, gifts, and an unforgettable Christmas celebration.
We would like to thank all of the volunteers, because of you, this event was a complete success.
