About: Aperture—a not-for-profit foundation dedicated to advancing photography in all its forms—was founded in 1952 by six gifted individuals: photographers Ansel Adams, Dorothea Lange, Barbara Morgan, and Minor White; historian Beaumont Newhall; and writer/curator Nancy Newhall. With scant resources, these visionary artists created a new periodical, Aperture magazine, to serve photographers and photography enthusiasts worldwide. As the medium flourished, so too did Aperture Foundation, expanding to include the subsequent publication of books (over four hundred to date); limited-edition photographs and portfolios; artist lectures and symposia; and a traveling exhibitions program that since its inception has presented over one hundred exhibitions at major museums and cultural institutions throughout the United States and abroad.

Aperture is committed to presenting new and unpublished work by well-known and emerging artists from all over the world, fostering an ever-expanding community of shared interest at a time when the scope and concerns of photography’s impact continues to evolve.

Aperture recognizes that history has proven how powerful photography can be in revealing injustices, often provoking controversy and inspiring action and change. We measure Aperture's success, in part, by the depth and expression of its social conscience, and we continue to be a forum for those photographers who are dedicated to considering the concerns of our time.

Join master photographer Joel Meyerowitz and author Phillip Lopate for a talk and book signing on the occasion of the publication of Legacy: The Preservation of Wilderness in New York City Parks (Aperture, October 2009). This compelling body of work is the result of a unique commission Meyerowitz received from the New ...York City Department of Parks & Recreation to document, interpret, and celebrate one of the city's greatest legacies: nearly nine thousand acres of parks in the five boroughs in the five boroughs that still exist close to their original pristine state, as well as areas within parks that have been left to revert to wilderness. To accompany these magnificent images, Lopate contributed an essay that expands on his notion of the urban walk-poem. (Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg contributed the book's forword.) Meyerowitz is the first photographer to document New York City's parks since the 1930s, when they were photographed as part of Franklin D. Roosevelt's WPA program.Leer más
