About: Aperture—a not-for-profit foundation dedicated to advancing photography in all its forms—was founded in 1952 by six gifted individuals: photographers Ansel Adams, Dorothea Lange, Barbara Morgan, and Minor White; historian Beaumont Newhall; and writer/curator Nancy Newhall. With scant resources, these visionary artists created a new periodical, Aperture magazine, to serve photographers and photography enthusiasts worldwide. As the medium flourished, so too did Aperture Foundation, expanding to include the subsequent publication of books (over four hundred to date); limited-edition photographs and portfolios; artist lectures and symposia; and a traveling exhibitions program that since its inception has presented over one hundred exhibitions at major museums and cultural institutions throughout the United States and abroad.

Aperture is committed to presenting new and unpublished work by well-known and emerging artists from all over the world, fostering an ever-expanding community of shared interest at a time when the scope and concerns of photography’s impact continues to evolve.

Aperture recognizes that history has proven how powerful photography can be in revealing injustices, often provoking controversy and inspiring action and change. We measure Aperture's success, in part, by the depth and expression of its social conscience, and we continue to be a forum for those photographers who are dedicated to considering the concerns of our time.

Aperture Foundation The Freedom Tower at Miami Dade College, in conjunction with Aperture Foundation and Magnum Photos, presents Invasion 68 Prague, an exhibition of Josef Koudelka's remarkable work made during one historic week in August 1968. In the midst of the turmoil of the Soviet-led invasion, which ended the short-lived political f ...reedom in Czechoslovakia that came to be known as the Prague Spring, Koudelka took to the streets to document this critical moment. His powerful photographs reached Magnum Photos in New York and earned the still-anonymous photographer the Robert Capa Award. This exhibition, coproduced by Aperture and Magnum Photos, has been shown in New York, Washington, D.C., and Mexico. Many of the images reproduced in large-scale prints and grids have never been seen before; compelling texts by Czech historians complete the exhibition. All images and texts are taken from Koudelka's stunning Aperture monograph Invasion 68: Prague, which includes 250 photographs chosen by the artist from his archive.
