The Lower Marowijne region, located in the northeast corner of the country, is home to eight indigenous communities who have filed a collective land claim with the Surinamese government. RF-US has supported their efforts through a mapping project and in promoting indigenous rights legislation in Suriname, which remains the only country in South America that doesn’t recognize these rights.
