Copper Canyon Press A bookseller from Powell's just called and said he hand-sold 5 copies of Red Pine's translation of the Taoteching yesterday, in the wake of an enthusiastic review on Powells.com: “This is a manifesto of a life lived in relationship with the natural rhythms of creation…. In addressing this translation, one shouldn’t neg ...lect one of its salient features: the inclusion of commentaries on each chapter from the last 2,000 years of Chinese religious thought.”

Everyone needs a Taoteching. After all, Lao-Tzu's is one of the most magnificent, deep, and heady religious voices to have emerged from the world's wisdom traditions. But, there are so many to choose from! There's the Mitchell version, the LeGuin version, and the John C. ...

That is what the Powells.com review points to: The delightful challenge of discovering translations that work for individual readers. There are scores of English translations and although some are better than others, beware when someone claims “This one ... Ver más...’s the best.” Better to say “This one closes in on the heart of the matter.” Regarding the Red Pine version Copper Canyon just published: Red Pine reads the language; he’s translated Chinese religious and literary texts for over 30 years and is brilliant at it; he’s traveled tens of thousands of miles in China doing first-hand research; the brief commentaries he includes after every verse from poets, monks, recluses, scholars, etc, create a dialogue about the Taoteching that is truly unique and invaluable. So even if someone prefers a different version in English, it would be wise to have Red Pine’s Taoteching right next to it to compare translations and see what commentators over the past 2000 years were thinking and theorizing about specific verses.

We love it when discussions lead to poems. While reflecting on tattoos, interpretation, translation, and understanding, we are reminded of Peter Pereira’s title poem from his book “What’s Written on the Body.” To give a bit of context to the poem, Pereira is a physician in Seattle working with immigrant communities. http://www.coppercanyonpress.org/catalog/index.cfm?action=displayPoem&Book_ID=1266&Poem_ID=1600

The closing poem was "The Man in the Dead Machine," by Donald Hall, selected by our intern James. (Links below). Copper Canyon Press Rather than work today, we all sat around the office leafing through books and looking for poems we could read aloud tomorrow at our tables. Favorites included Thomas McGrath’s “Praises,” Richard Jones’ “Drinking with My Mother and Father,” Gregory Orr’s “Praising all creation...”, and Joseph Stroud’s “Homage to Life” ...(linked below). We wish you good eating and happy reading.
