ENCHIRIADIS, female vocal ensemble, is considered one of the most innovatory musical projects of Aragon in the Spanish vocal music panorama. Its concerts, praised by both Aragonese (see the reviews in Heraldo de Aragon) and national critics (see the reviews published in Ritmo magazine), show a path marked by quality, originality and innovation.
Its concert proposals emerge from deep research in the present repertoire for female voices, and includes premieres specially composed for ENCHIRIADIS, such as the recently performed piece "Pie Jesu" by Víctor Carlos Rebullida, winner of the Reina Sofia National Music Award. They are currently preparing the premiere of a piece composed by Polo Vallejo for Enchiriadis.
Similarly, its instrumental contributions are marked by a careful search, based not only on technical brilliance and virtuosity, but also on the known artistic talent of its young performers, all Aragonese prizewinners.
ENCHIRIADIS was formed in 2005, and its components were selected from audition by Jorge Apodaca Aisa, its founder and conductor, on the basis of three criteria: beauty of voice, education on vocal technique and musical knowledge. The result is a vocal ensemble with a forceful and timbered sound "of great solidity" (Víctor Rebullida, Ritmo magazine). An ensemble that brings together some of the best female voices in Aragon, with a great profusion of soloists who are renowned at several levels, as well as advanced students of singing and professional singers (Singing High School of Madrid, ESMUC (Music High School of Cataluña) and Professional Music Conservatoire of Zaragoza). Its members are drawn from the whole of Aragon (La Almunia, Andorra, Monzón, Alcorisa, Huesca, Jaca and Zaragoza) as well as including some born and educated abroad (Argentina, Peru and Venezuela).
Our work is defined by the purpose of retaining in our city a vocal ensemble of high quality whose working dynamics allow present-day Aragonese female singers to maintain an attachement to Aragonese culture.
BIOGRAPHY
WHO ARE WE?
ENCHIRIADIS was created in 2005, and its components were selected from audition by Jorge
Apodaca, its founder and conductor, on the basis of three criteria: beauty of voice, education on vocal
technique and musical knowledge. The ensemble brings together some advanced students of singing
and professional singers (Singing High School of Madrid, Music High School of Cataluña, and
Professional Music Conservatoire of Zaragoza). Its members are drawn from the whole Aragón, Spain
(La Almunia, Andorra, Monzón, Alcorisa, Huesca, Jaca and Zaragoza), and also includes some born
and educated abroad (Argentina, Peru and Venezuela).
“Enchiriadis” is a treatise on medieval music where it is tried to settle on for the first time the laws of
the nascent polyphony, which is very early because we are talking about the 9th century. However, what
identifies Enchiriadis Female Vocal Ensemble with this name is not the kind of repertoire we work on
but what this treatise had of innovative, search and research into new possibilities in music.
Our concert proposals emerge from a deep research in the present repertoire for female voices. Includes
premieres specially composed for ENCHIRIADIS, such as the performed piece “Pie Jesu” by Víctor
Carlos Rebullida, winner of the Reina Sofia National Music Award, and also different programmes such
as the one called “Stella Maris” with songs to the Virgin Mary, the “En-chanted poetry” with poems of
Joyce, Yeats, Lorca and Rilke (set to music by 20th century composers), or “A Ceremony of Carols” of
Benjamin Britten among others. At present we are working on a contemporary programme and also on
a Latin – American Music one.
ENCHIRIADIS
During our short life we have given different concerts throughout the country among which we could
emphasize two of them in the Auditorium of Zaragoza (in 2006 and 2008), one in the International
Meetings of Choral Music in Borja (in 2007), one in the show of “Aragón Awards 2009” and another
one in the FIMUC (International Choral Music Festival of Cuenca) in 2009.
In August of 2008 we made a tour throughout Germany and Switzerland and gave concerts in Sankt
Blasien, Freiburg and Bern.
We have also achieved two prizes in the last two years:
– First prize in the III National Contest of Habaneras (equal voices) in Miranda de Ebro, Burgos,
Spain (June of 2008)
– First prize in the XI Antigua Contest (equal voices), in Zumárraga, Guipúzcoa, Spain (May of
2009), where we also achieved the higher score among all choirs which gives us the opportunity to
participate in the Great National Award that it will take place in December of 2010 in Rojales,
Alicante, Spain.
Our work is defined by the purpose of retaining in our city a vocal ensemble of high quality whose
working dynamics allow present- day Aragonese female singers to maintain an attachement to
Aragonese culture.
