- The acclaimed International Hispanic Theatre Festival (IHTF) of Miami, presented by Teatro Avante, American Airlines, the festival’s official airline, and the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County, is celebrating its 24th anniversary season by bringing some of the best theatre companies from Europe, Latin America and the United States to various locations in Miami and Key Biscayne, July 8-26, 2009.
We are privileged to announce that this year the award-winning IHTF of Miami honors Colombia, in recognition of the contribution this country has made to Latin American culture.
►The Festival lasts three weeks and performances are scheduled Wednesday through Sunday.
►The Festival is held in two South Florida cities: Miami and Key Biscayne.
►The Festival features nine productions from Colombia, Spain, Mexico and the United States (Miami and Los Angeles). Included are plays staged in Spanish only, in Spanish with English supertitles and in English only. The Festival also presents children’s theatre.
►The Festival opens at the Carnival Studio Theater, Adrienne Arsht Center, on Wednesday, July 8.
►The Festival’s venues also include Prometeo Theatre at Miami Dade College’s Wolfson Campus and the Key Biscayne Community Center.
►The Festival’s International Children’s Day celebration, in collaboration with the Key Biscayne Community Center, will be held on Sunday, July 12.
►The Educational Component of the Festival, conducted under the direction of Dr. Beatriz J. Rizk and in collaboration with the Florida Center for the Literary Arts at Miami Dade College, includes post-performance forums, a conference titled “Current Trends in Latino and Latin American Performing Arts” and a book presentation on Saturday, July 11, at the Florida Center for the Literary Arts, 300 N.E. 2nd Avenue, Miami. This component will also include a staged reading.
►The Festival’s “Life Achievement in the Performing Arts Award” will be presented to Maestro Santiago García, founder and director of Bogota’s La Candelaria theatre company, at the Carnival Theater of the Adrienne Arsht Center on Wednesday, July 8, immediately following the performance of Carta de una desconocida, written and directed by Manuel Orjuela C.
►The Festival poster was designed by internationally renowned artist Marta Visbal of Bogota, Colombia. The Poster Unveiling Cocktail Reception will be held on Thursday, June 11, co-sponsored by the Consulate General of Colombia in Miami, Caldas Rum and Cristal, Mondongo’s Restaurant and El Paisita.
►The Festival’s VIP Opening Celebration, on Wednesday, July 8, and Closing Reception, on Sunday, July 26, both immediately following the performance, will be held at the new Chicago’s Steakhouse & Tavern, 3120 Commodore Plaza, Coconut Grove.
►The Festival will hold an exhibit of photographs taken by renowned photographer Asela Torres of plays staged by Colombian theatre groups at the Festival since 1989, in the lobby of the Carnival Studio Theater throughout the month of July.
As a tribute to Colombia, in celebration of that nation’s contribution to Latin American culture, the Festival will open with Carta de una desconocida, presented by LOS OJOS DEL HERMANO ETERNO from Bogota, co-sponsored by Mercantil Commercebank.
PROMETEO THEATRE of the Florida Center for the Literary Arts at Miami Dade College, one of the Festival’s founding companies, presents Otelo (Othello) by William Shakespeare, adapted by Raquel Carrió, directed by Lilliam Vega and performed in Spanish with English supertitles.
Three companies are coming from Mexico: Mexico City’s LA MAQUINA DE TEATRO presents Nezahualcoyotl, written and directed by Juliana Faesler, and KRAKEN TEATRO presents El evangelio según Clark (The Gospel According to Clark), written and directed by Richard Viqueira, while Guanajuato’s CORNISA 20 presents Mariachi Clown, written and directed by Roberto Avendaño. Mariachi Clown is being staged in celebration of International Children’s Day on Sunday, July 12, in collaboration with the Key Biscayne Community Center and the Mexican Cultural Institute in Miami, co-sponsored by the Key Biscayne Community Foundation, the Village of Key Biscayne and the Marlins Community Foundation.
From Murcia, Spain, ALQUIBLA TEATRO returns, this time with Bodas de sangre (Blood Wedding) by Federico García Lorca, directed by Antonio Saura, while the same city’s TEATRO LOS CLAVELES presents Clásicos españoles (Spanish Classics) by Cervantes and Zorrilla, directed by Paca García and Aniceto Roca.
From our own Los Angeles, THEATRE OF ANGELS presents the English-language Días y Flores by Oliver Mayer, directed by Luis Alfaro, and once again, TEATRO AVANTE, the company that produces and presents the Festival and is celebrating its 30th anniversary, will close the Festival, on this occasion with Aire frío (Cold Air), a Cuban classic written by Virgilio Piñera, adapted by Raquel Carrió, directed by Mario Ernesto Sánchez and performed in Spanish with English supertitles.
