NO BROW: POP, POST, MASS

Join us for talks on how the barriers between low and high culture are breaking down, and how the fabric of human social life has become much more than the artistic and creative products of society’s elite, legitimized by formal institutions. Our guests will explore how perspectives and experien ...ces of “common people” in general can offer compelling insights into the social world.

Dr. Mark Kingwell is a Canadian philosopher who is currently professor of philosophy at the University of Toronto and a Senior Fellow of Massey College. He specializes in theories of politics and culture, and is well known for his appearance in the documentary film The Corporation. Through studies of television, movies, gardens, shopping malls, public squares and sports, he has investigated how citizens are shaped, and sometimes deformed by, their engagements with the materials of ordinary life. His current research focuses on citizenship and globalization with an emphasis on the relationship of public spaces to political action.

Coopers' Camera, Warren P. Sonoda, 2008

When Gord (Jason Jones, The Daily Show) gives his wife Nancy (Samantha Bee, The Daily Show) a video camera for Christmas 1985 and then an estranged uncle arrives, the Cooper family holidays disintegrate in a hilarious way. Shot in the style of VHS home movies, the new camera makes ... us witness to Nancy's advanced third pregnancy and her suspicious excitement at the pending visit of her husband's brother, as well as the anti-social live-in grandmother who retires early to bed and requests the turkey be slipped under her door. With Dave Foley's cameo appearance, Coopers' Camera is reminiscent of SCTV and Kids in the Hall.

This film will be preceded by Mon Nom est Victor Gazon (Patrick Gaze, 2007, 11 min, 14A, English/French).
