Danica Patrick's well-publicized visit to Stewart-Haas Racing on Monday was just one of five shop tours the popular IndyCar Series driver took during her visit to NASCAR country. Industry sources say she also visited the shops at Roush Fenway Racing, Michael Waltrip Racing, Joe Gibbs Racing and Richard Childress Racing, all just north of Charlotte. Patrick is in the final year of her contract with Andretti Green Racing on the IndyCar circuit and she has been exploring her options in NASCAR with several teams. One emerging scenario would keep Patrick in IndyCar next season, while also permitting her to learn stock cars as a part-time driver in select Nationwide Series and ARCA races. With 17 races on the IndyCar schedule, it is believed that Patrick could run a significant part-time schedule in the developmental Nationwide Series (Michael Smith, SportsBusiness Journal).
PATRICK STILL UNDECIDED: Patrick Thursday said she is still undecided about which circuit she would race in next season. Patrick: "I love Indy Car. It’s what I’m familiar with, having a good year. I’m having fun with the team, with all the drivers. Obviously, it’s all familiar now. But, I’m interested in the excitement of NASCAR. I think the racing looks like a lot of fun and there are a lot of opportunities there.” Stewart-Haas Racing co-Owner Tony Stewart made the move from IndyCar to NASCAR in '99, and Patrick said of a potential partnership with the race team, "I think anything’s possible. I have a lot of respect for Tony. I’ve known him for a long time. ... I’ve got a lot of respect for him, and he obviously has a good grasp as to the difference between the two and what you need to do well.” ESPN’s Eric Neel noted he hopes Patrick races in NASCAR next season, saying, "There’s a new challenge for her. There’s a bump for NASCAR, something to pay attention to. ... We’re looking at something new here. We’re seeing what can she translate from one track to the other in the same way that Tony Stewart did” (“Jim Rome Is Burning,” ESPN, 7/16).
AN EARLY INDICATION? ESPN's Angelique Chengelis said, "I think she’s really putting herself in the position to negotiate a much better deal in the IRL." Chengelis: "What I’m hearing -- and it’s mostly from the IRL side -- is that they fully expect to see her in an IndyCar the next few years, probably with Chip Ganassi Racing, which makes her transition to NASCAR if she decides to do that certainly a much easier, a much smoother transition into that sport because of Ganassi’s ties in NASCAR” (“NASCAR Now,” ESPN, 7/16).

Does Danica Patrick Smoke? Danica Patrick graced the halls of Stewart-Haas Racing today, signing autographs for fans on Monday afternoon. That's right, the reigning queen of open wheel racing wanted to take a tour of the Concord, N.C., shop.
Could Danica be coming to NASCAR? Yes, I know, we've heard this be fore.
But...
Patrick is currently in the last year of her contract with Andretti Green Racing and has expressed interest in NASCAR before. It would be wise for Danica to explore options other than open wheel racing right now. The sport is losing viewers and the endorsement money is with NASCAR.
Patrick and Stewart know each other as she was a guest of Smoke's last fall at Phoenix. Not to mention their IRL Series commonality. Her tour today was minus the two-time Cup champion as he was at a Goodyear tire test at Atlanta Motor Speedway.
According to FOX Sports, Patrick was introduced to Ryan Newman, crew chief Tony Gibson, General Manager Bobby Hutchens and engineer Matt Borland.
The tour reportedly included stops at the fabrication shop and a look at the seven-post shaker rig.
If Danica were to choose to move to NASCAR, Stewart-Haas would be a good landing spot.
Sprint Cup cars are a lot to handle and with her small frame I'm not sure she would physically be able to handle the 36 weeks.
But, if Smoke can't make Patrick competitive in this sport, no one will.
Everything Smoke touches turns to gold. Look at Ryan Newman's numbers last season and look at them now. While he hasn't won yet, he's clearly entrenched in the Chase at 7th.
If Patrick chose to switch to stock cars, she could feasibly running several Nationwide (or Camping World Truck) races before going in to full-time competition in a cup car the following year.
With the 2009 IndyCar Series season ending on Oct. 10 at Homestead-Miami Speedway, Danica could attempt to qualify for events in that span. A likely Nationwide ride might be with JR Motorsports.
Brad Keselowski, Junior's Nationwide driver, is primed for a Cup ride. So he'll most likely be leaving. And Junior already carries Go Daddy, Danica's sponsor.

TORONTO, Canada (July 11, 2009) - Andretti Green Racing drivers Danica Patrick, Tony Kanaan, Marco Andretti and Hideki Mutoh qualified for Sunday's running of the Honda Indy Toronto on the Streets of Toronto.
Patrick, driver of the #7 Boost Mobile/Motorola car, will start in the 18th position. Kanaan, driver of the #11 Team 7-Eleven/Nestle Pure Life entry, will start 20th. Andretti, driver of the #26 NYSE iShares car, will start in the 17th position. Mutoh, who drives the #27 Formula Dream car, will start 22nd.
Live coverage of tomorrow's race will be provided by ABC, starting at 1 p.m. ET, be sure to tune in!
Driver: Danica Patrick
Car: #7 Boost Mobile Dallara/Honda/Firestone
Danica Patrick: "It's been a pretty interesting day for us. We had a pretty decent car during this morning's session, even though it was the worst track conditions you would drive in. But once the track dried, we lost all the grip. I don't know what the solution is, but as a team we are all behind the eight-ball and it's really frustrating for me and my teammates. Anything can happen in the race tomorrow, so hopefully things will fall our way."
Driver: Tony Kanaan
Car: #11 Team 7-Eleven/Nestle Pure Life Dallara/Honda/Firestone
Tony Kanaan: "It's been a frustrating day. The Nestle Pure Life guys worked really hard after this morning's incident to get the car back together. This isn't where we wanted to start for tomorrow's race but we are up for the challenge. I have to thank the guys for all their efforts today and hopefully we will have a better result tomorrow."
Driver: Marco Andretti
Car: #26 NYSE iShares Dallara/Honda/Firestone
Marco Andretti: "It's been a rough day for AGR as a whole and all around I think the starting grid is a bit surprising. It's a tough circuit, for sure and the rain this morning made it tough to dial in on a qualifying set up. The NYSE iShares car is definitely starting farther back than we'd like. We've had a couple decent comebacks on road and street courses so hopefully we can do the same tomorrow."
Driver: Hideki Mutoh
Car: #27 Formula Dream Dallara/Honda/Firestone
Hideki Mutoh: "It's been very tough day for the Formula Dream team. This course is very challenging and we haven't been able to find the perfect setup. We will be working tonight to figure out what we can do between now and tomorrow that will lead to better results."
