Deep in the heart of the Rockies, the small Victorian town of Redstone lies beneath soaring sandstone cliffs. Ample snowfall and year-round waterfalls that freeze solid from November through March make the hamlet an ice and mixed climber’s get away—over 100 routes, from WI 2 to WI 5, and M2 to M10, rim the canyon, and ...most are just minutes from the car.
On February 5, 6 and 7, the Western Colorado town will be the scene of the Rock and Ice Winterfest. Supported by the town of Redstone, Winterfest is an “everyman’s” event, with topropes hung on a variety of roadside attractions and lead routes prepped and ready for all comers. And it’s all free. Simply show up, climb, and test drive the latest gear from Black Diamond, C.AM.P., Omega Pacific, La Sportiva, RAB, Sterling, Mammut and Maxim. Between burns, check out the action as Will Gadd and Sam Elias project the first ascent of a 70-meter M12. There’s no registration for the climbing, and did we mention that it is all free?
After hours, enjoy an ample beer tasting with the editors of Rock and Ice, and a spicy-hot chili cook off guaranteed to curl your hair.
Durning the day, when (if) you tire of climbing, sign up for a climbing clinic from Aspen Expeditions www.aspenexpeditions.com, tie in to one of Winterfest’s numerous cross-country ski and snowshoe races, or just ski tour the area’s pristine wilderness. Ink the Rock and Ice Winterfest on your calendar now, and for more about Redstone go to: http://www.redstonecolorado.com/
